Here we have for sale is our 1955 Vauxhall Cresta 6 cylinder petrol.2.2
The Velox and Wyvern came along in the late 1940s to replace the Vauxhall 12 as the mid-size family offering, and were the brand?s first post-war vehicles. Taking clear design inspiration from across the Atlantic, the Velox and Wyvern shared a body but were separated by an engine.
Where the Velox sported a 2.2-litre six cylinder, the Wyvern originally had a 1.4-litre four, good for around 35hp. That meant that the Velox catered for a more sporting audience – later joined by a more luxurious Cresta model in 1954.
With 65-years on the roads, there?s a little bit of history with the Cresta. Along with some receipts for work such as having the chrome work re-plated and polished back in 2013. From more recent times, you?ll find receipts for replacement parts
It?s a classic cabin, which carries on the red/Cream theme from the exterior to great effect. Both sets of bench seats are finished in Red/Cream Vinyl are in generally good condition, with no rips or tears. There?s some discolouration and tears on one of the rear door cards but it?s as expected for a vehicle of this age. The carpets and mats are all in OK condition and rip-free too and so is the headlining.
The bodywork of the car could do with some restoration work as there is micro-blistering in the paint and the door bottoms do have rusting to the bottom of them. There is also a crack in the paint on the top of the drivers front and rear wing around the chrome moulding as well as the petrol cap. The Chrome work is in great condition and shines bright.
Underneath the car is solid with no holes to the floors, sills, or chassis. All the suspension components look in good order with no broken coil springs or rear leaf springs and all the shockers look dry.
The Cresta comes from a simpler age of motoring, and there?s really only a limited amount that can go wrong – none of which is in evidence on this car.
There were no issues starting the Cresta’s 2.2-litre engine, and it runs without hesitation or a lumpen idle. Under acceleration the engine exhibited no issues, nor did the three-speed gearbox either forwards or in reverse. There were no undue noises from the suspension or brakes, though you will have to bear in mind that the Cresta is equipped with drum brakes all round.
Though now MOT and Tax exempt, It?s not currently covered by an MOT, but passed its last with no advisories,
The Vauxhall will be sold as a restoration project so there would be no warranty given with this vehicle. We are selling the Vauxhall due to increased work demand and other ongoing projects so we haven’t got the time to commit to restoring it ourselves.
